1 Corinthians 13:12(NIV) – “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
Have you ever tried to drive in the fog where everything in front of you is obscured? You know your path leads somewhere but can’t quite see where. This experience reflects our lives at times. As a pastor, I have spent countless hours with individuals who say, “I don’t understand.” Their stories, filled with pain, confusion, and mystery, echo a sentiment many of us have felt.
Reflection
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul expresses this idea beautifully. He recognizes that our ability to understand is limited, like seeing a reflection in a poorly lit mirror. However, he also provides encouragement. There will be a time when we will see clearly and understand fully, just as God knows us presently.
Life is a mosaic of events, emotions, and experiences. While some pieces are beautiful and vibrant, others are cloudy and obscure. However, each piece has its place, and the entire picture will come into focus from a distance. As a child, I heard older people saying we will understand it better by and by.
Takeaway
When we’re confused or in pain and can’t see the bigger picture, we should remember that God’s perspective is eternal. He sees everything, including our past, present, and future. Although we may struggle to understand what’s happening in the present, God knows what’s best for us in the long run. Our job is to have faith in Him, even when we don’t fully understand.
Action Steps
To improve your understanding and deepen your faith, try out these four practices:
1. Reflective Journaling: Take a few minutes each night to write down anything you didn’t fully understand that day. As time passes, go back to past entries and look for moments when things became clearer.
2. Scripture Dive: Once a week, explore Bible stories where people faced doubts or confusion. Consider Moses, Noah, or Peter in his misunderstanding of Jesus and his mission. Think about how God played a role in their eventual understanding.
3. Community Sharing: Consider joining or creating a small group where members can discuss their moments of confusion and how they found or are seeking clarity.
4. Daily Affirmation: Start each day by reminding yourself that although you may not understand everything now, God has a complete vision and timing. Place your trust in His plan.
Prayer
Lord, when understanding eludes us, grant us the patience to wait and the faith to trust in Your complete vision. Please help us find solace in the promise that a day will come when all will be clear. Until then, may we lean into You, find comfort in Your embrace, and trust that You are piecing together the mosaic of our lives? In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
