Our history

OUR BEGINNING

It all began September 1924 when a group of ten had a vision. Brother and Sister Felix Hearn, Sister Fredonia Martin, Cora Smith and Velma Meeks along with Wrentha Buckner who acted as recording secretary. Rev. Charles Hawkins, Rev. Mitchell Coleman assisted with the organizing and our first Pastor Rev. R. W. Warren was also present. With these individuals in place, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was organized. The church moved from 1700 Madison Street to 1600 Connecticut Street and 1800 Adams Street.

They immediately began to build the infrastructure of the newly founded church. They quickly went to work organizing the Sunday School, Choir, Usher and Missionary Departments.

On September 27, 1930, Rev. Douglas G. Lewis was called to pastor Galilee and was installed on the first Sunday in October of 1930 with a membership of fifty people.

The congregation continued to outgrow each building and in 1935 they decided to build a larger one at 1632 Madison Street for a cost of 8,224.85.

From 1935 to 1943 the church membership grew beyond expectations, especially since the world was in the midst of World War II. Still, Rev. Lewis and the congregation had a dream of a larger church. In January of 1944, the church purchased two lots at 1548-50 Madison Street and plans for a new church were created and construction began in April 1944. On January 29, 1945, the elated Pastor and congregation marched from 1632 Madison Street to the edifice in which we worship today. In 1955 the church held a mortgage burning ceremony.

For 28 years, Rev. Lewis and his family endeared themselves to Galilee and the community. He served as Moderator of the Northern Indiana Baptist Association and President of the General Baptist Convention, U.S.A. In December of 1957 illness affected the energetic pastor until his death April of 1958.

From 1959 to 1962 Rev. Floyd E. Dumas served as Pastor of Galilee. After which, the church appointed Rev. Thomas Paul Johnson of Eldorado, Arkansas to serve as their leader in 1963. With the theme Facing New Horizons, Rev. Johnson set out to continue building God’s kingdom. Attendance and membership increased as well as updating and renovations of the building for a cost of 180,000.00. As the years past, Rev. Johnson made improvements to the church. Because of generous gifts the church now was deeded more land which they paved and fenced for parking. On June 1, 1999 after 36 years of faithful and dedicated service to Galilee, Rev. Johnson retired.

In November of 2000, Rev. Charles M. Morgan of Kansas City, Kansas was installed as Pastor of Galilee. God moved us into higher ground building from our past. Under Pastor Morgan’s leadership we have expanded our ministries, outreach, reaching the lost at all costs, renovating the building and most importantly learning to see life from God’s point of view.

Wednesday Meditation Shield of Faith in Times of Wednesday Meditation

Shield of Faith in Times of Political Unrest
Scripture:
"Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." — Ephesians 6:16 (KJV)
Reflection: A Battle Not of Flesh and Blood
The turmoil we see is not just about leaders, governments, or policies—it is a manifestation of a deeper, unseen war. Paul says earlier in Ephesians 6:12:
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
This means that the corruption and evil we witness are not just human failings; they are influenced by dark spiritual forces seeking to destroy nations, oppress the weak, and silence God’s people. But as believers, we do not fight with earthly weapons (2 Corinthians 10:4). Instead, we hold up our shield of faith.
How the Shield of Faith Protects Us
Faith Reminds Us That God is Sovereign – No leader, government, or wicked scheme can overthrow the King of Kings (Daniel 2:21).
Faith Guards Our Hearts from Fear – The world may be unstable, but God remains our refuge and stronghold (Psalm 46:1-2).
Faith Keeps Us Anchored in Truth – Propaganda, deception, and lies may flood the media, but faith in God’s Word gives clarity and wisdom (John 16:13).
Faith empowers us to Stand for Righteousness. Instead of despair, we rise as warriors of prayer, truth, and justice (Micah 6:8).
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in these times of unrest, we trust You as our refuge and defender. Strengthen our faith to stand firm against fear and deception. Protect the vulnerable, expose corruption, and bring justice. Let Your Kingdom come, and Your will be done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Mrs. Annette Austin, a devoted and cherished membe Mrs. Annette Austin, a devoted and cherished member of Galilee Baptist Church who has been a part of our family for an incredible 73 years.

Mrs. Austin joined Galilee on May 1, 1951, when her parents, Isaac and Dorothy Preston, brought her and her sister JoAnn to our church. From the very beginning, Mrs. Austin embraced an active role in the life of Galilee, becoming a vital part of our community.

As a young woman, she served on the Youth Usher Board and later continued her service on Usher Board #3, where she has been a steadfast presence for many years. Her contributions extend far beyond the doors of the sanctuary, having served on the Kitchen Committee, where her work added warmth and fellowship to countless events. She also lent her beautiful voice to the Junior Choir and later the Adult Choir.

Mrs. Austin has also been a dedicated member of the Rebekah Mission Circle, reflecting her commitment to both faith and service. Her involvement in these ministries has enriched the life of Galilee and touched the hearts of so many in our church family.

Mrs. Austin, your 73 years of dedication, love, and service have been a blessing to Galilee Baptist Church. Today, we honor you for your faithfulness, your spirit of service, and the legacy of commitment you represent.
Carenzia Gates joined Galilee on April 3, 1951, as Carenzia Gates joined Galilee on April 3, 1951, as a young woman eager to serve. From the very beginning, she became an integral part of our church family. Under the leadership of Pastor D.G. Lewis, Carenzia was a driving force in the church’s activities. She made ice cream to sell after service.

Her passion for serving didn’t stop there. She joined the Usher Board immediately upon becoming a member, where she found joy in greeting and serving others. Over the years, she has been a member of Usher Board #3 and supervised the Youth Usher Board, helping to shape the next generation with grace and care.

Carenzia’s heart for service extended far beyond the doors of the sanctuary. She was an active member of the kitchen committee, always a reliable presence as an usher when the church fellowshipped or served with other churches. She also assisted teachers in Vacation Bible School, ensuring that young minds were nurtured in faith.
Her commitment to her community mirrored her dedication to the church. She worked as the head cook for Kentucky Fried Chicken before serving as a lunch matron in the Gary Community School System, retiring in 1993. For over 40 years, she volunteered at Methodist Hospital Northlake and played an active role in her block club, embodying the spirit of selfless service wherever she went.

As a mother of two children, grandmother to two, and great-grandmother to three, Carenzia’s legacy of love and hard work shines brightly through her family and her church community.

Carenzia, you have been a pillar of strength and faith for Galilee Baptist Church. Your social nature, hard work, and tireless service will never be forgotten. Today, we honor you not just for your longevity, but for your heart, your faith, and your dedication to our church and community.
Mrs. Gloria Blackmon joined Galilee Baptist Church Mrs. Gloria Blackmon joined Galilee Baptist Church on April 2, 1950, and has been an irreplaceable part of our church family ever since. For over 60 years, she faithfully served as the church secretary, a role in which her dedication and meticulous work helped guide the administration of the church.

Before her time as Galilee’s secretary, she worked downtown in the Gary National Bank building for Dr. Leonard Hoit, and later contributed her skills to Easter Seals, reflecting her lifelong dedication to serving others.

A proud graduate of Froebel, having attended from kindergarten through twelfth grade, Mrs. Blackmon has carried her love of learning into her work at Galilee. She taught Vacation Bible School, sharing her faith and wisdom with younger generations. As a member of the Rebekah Mission Circle and the Board of Christian Education, she has tirelessly worked to uphold and advance the spiritual mission of our church.

Her service extended to the kitchen committee, where her delicious dressing and cakes became a staple at funeral repasts and church events. Her contributions nourished not just the body but the spirit, offering comfort and care during times of fellowship and remembrance.

In addition to her administrative and culinary gifts, Mrs. Blackmon is a gifted singer. For many years, she blessed our congregation with her beautiful rendition of Bless This House O’ Lord during church anniversary celebrations, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

As the mother of three children, grandmother of two, and great-grandmother of one, Mrs. Blackmon’s legacy of love and faith extends beyond Galilee and into her family, who carry forward the values she has instilled.

Mrs. Blackmon, your decades of service, your willingness to step into any role, and your enduring faith have been a blessing to our church. You have given so much of yourself to Galilee, and today we celebrate and honor all that you have done and all that you mean to us.

Thank you for your heart, your voice, and your steadfast dedication.
Mrs. Dale Holly joined Galilee on October 17, 1948 Mrs. Dale Holly joined Galilee on October 17, 1948, and from the very beginning, she poured her heart into the life of the church. A proud graduate of Roosevelt High School’s Class of 1952, Mrs. Holly shined as a varsity cheerleader, a role that showcased her vibrant spirit and energy—a spirit that remained with her throughout her life.

Mrs. Holly is not only a woman of faith but also a woman of remarkable accomplishments. She worked as a licensed beautician, served in the Canteen Department at Inland Steel, and later as a Bill Supervisor at Calumet Township under Dozier Allen. She retired as a Deputy Assessor for Lake County, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication in her professional life.

Her personal life is equally rich and fulfilling. As the loving mother of five children, grandmother to seven, great-grandmother to 15, and great-great-grandmother to one—with another on the way—Mrs. Holly’s legacy of love and devotion extends through the generations of her family.

Beyond her work and family, she embraced life with joy, enjoying skating, bowling, and playing bid whist. Her hobbies reflect her lively personality and her ability to find happiness in all she did.

Mrs. Holly, today, we honor you for your incredible legacy of over 70 years of dedication to God, your family, and your community.
